Raj commenced his role on 1 May 2010.  An alumnus of The University of  Manchester, Raj completed his MSc in 1975 and his PhD in 1980 and has considerable experience of world-class manufacturing, engineering and technology; he is currently a non-executive director at: Bodycote plc, Spirax-Sarco Engineering plc, WS Atkins plc and is Chairman of HHV Pumps Ltd, a private company based in Bangalore, India. 

Raj is a member of the Council of Science and Technology, the Prime Ministerial advisory body, and plays an active role in Government science and innovation policy

Clive Rowland

Clive began his working life in London with the Burmah-Castrol Oil Company as an industrial marketing and contracts executive and in external affairs at the London Business School.

He subsequently served in engineering management and training roles and then in management consulting before moving to UMIST in 1985, as Director of Industrial Liaison, before founding UMIST Ventures Limited in 1988.

He is a Chartered Director, a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Freeman of the City of London and has completed a number of executive management courses at the University of Chicago and Harvard Business School.

A member of a number of Research Council advisory committees and panels on science commercialisation, he has given more than 100 presentations and papers on technology transfer. He is a member of the Manchester Science Enterprise Centre's Management Board as well as several intellectual property and technology management groups.

He is carrying out research into women as directors of industrial corporations and start-up companies and currently acts as industrial adviser/sponsor for two PhD projects in women with technology enterprise careers.
