Parks and public spaces
Take your pick from the public squares in the city, each with a unique character, but all undeniably part of Manchester.
- Albert Square - next to the impressive architecture of the Town Hall (designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the architect responsible for our very own John Owens Building and London's Natural History Museum) - is worth visiting for its regular exhibits and seasonal international markets
- St Ann's Square features cafes and fountains - go there to enjoy further season markets, along with buskers and street entertainment
- Exchange Square is an unusual public space, complete with seating and a large-screen TV broadcasting the latest regional news and events
- Surrounded by gleaming office blocks, Spinningfields Square is the city's newest green space at the centre of an intensively redeveloped area
There are also pockets of green space across Manchester city centre:
- Piccadilly Gardens - an oasis of greenery and water in the middle of the shopping district
- Between Urbis and The Triangle - a landscaped green space perfect for relaxing and absorbing the surrounding architecture
- Historic Castlefield - an urban heritage park with canals, walkways and Roman ruins, just a few minutes' walk from the city centre
- Whitworth Park - well-maintained, located right next to the art gallery
