Ceramic dating technique features in new podcast series

06 Nov 2009

A University of Manchester researcher is the first to be featured in an exciting new series of podcasts from the Royal Society.

Dr Moira Wilson

Dr Moira Wilson from the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE), who hit the headlines earlier this year for discovering a new and reliable method of dating ceramic objects, speaks about her work in the first Royal Society Publishing Podcast.

The free series offers viewers an insight into the research behind some of the articles published by the Society. Each episode features an interview related to one or more of the most exciting articles published in its journals.

Dr Wilson’s paper in Proceedings of the Royal Society A, written in conjunction with Prof Chris Hall of The University of Edinburgh, reported on a new technique - 'rehydroxylation dating – that can be used on fired clay ceramics like bricks, tile and pottery.

The simple method promises to be as significant a technique for dating ceramic materials as radiocarbon dating has become for organic materials such as bone or wood.

You can find out more about the technique by watching the podcast at http://royalsocietypublishing.org/site/authors/podcasts.xhtml
