Messages of condolence

I worked with Alan at Melbourne University as his Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor before becoming the Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University.

I have, of course heard the dreadful news, and I wanted to convey my sympathy to you. I thought the world of Alan and I can't stop crying. I can only imagine what it is like for you over there.

Alan was a giant intellect - the best Vice-Chancellor of his time in Australia - in fact I think he was the best ever!  He was a person of unquestioned integrity and great humanity. He and I worked closely for many years. We never had a cross word. I was looking forward to his return to Australia - I have finished my term of appointment at Deakin and I was looking forward to seeing him again to fill in the details of our most recent appointments.

Please pass on my love to Ingrid and please know that I am thinking of you too.

Sally Walker (former Senior Deputy V-C at Melbourne, and V-C of Deakin University)

-----

I am shocked and saddened to hear that a man who has contributed so much to higher education, and in good health would I am sure have delivered so much more, is no longer with us. I see that his successor at Manchester Uni has written of Alan's "incredible insight, integrity and intelligence" and that he will be remembered at that University "with respect and affection".  The same could equally have been written about his time at the University of Melbourne.

I do not know how to contact Ingrid, but I hope you might pass on to her the thoughts and best wishes of the great many at Melbourne who also remember Alan with respect and affection.

Ian Renard (Allens Arthur Robinson, Australia)

-----

Please extend my sincere condolences on the great loss of Alan Gilbert, to his loving family,  friends, colleagues and to The University of Manchester.

From afar, I noted his passion for the University and his legacy can be seen by all who visit Manchester University and view the magnificent changes that have taken shape during his tenure.

A sad time for all associated with The University of Manchester.

Tom Blackburn (Founder & CEO, Translational Pharmacology BioVentures LLC, USA)

-----

I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news that Professor Gilbert has passed away.

On behalf of the staff and board of directors of The Christie, I would be grateful if you could pass on our deepest sympathy to his wife and family.  He was such a wonderful man who was incredibly supportive of The Christie and our work.  This news will greatly shock the many Christie staff who knew and respected him.

It was an honour and a pleasure to have known Alan and I will always remember him with great affection.

Alan’s family are in our thoughts at this very sad time.

Caroline Shaw (Chief Executive, Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust)

I was deeply saddened to learn, while travelling this afternoon, of the death of Alan Gilbert.  I write personally and on behalf of Queen's University Belfast to extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your colleagues at Manchester and to Alan's family.  Alan made an enormous contribution to Higher Education in a global context as well as to the Universities in which he worked, most especially Melbourne and Manchester.  His legacy is enormous, but that only increase the void left by his passing. Words are inadequate at this time, but please know that you and Alan's family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Professor Peter Gregson (President & Vice-Chancellor, Queens University Belfast)

-----

Please convey our deepest condolences to the family from myself, Omelia and those Alumni in Hong Kong who knew him.

What devasting news.  I feel so terribly, terribly sad for his family.

Wiebke Brockhaus-Grand (Board of Governors & staff member)

-----

This is dreadful news.  My heart goes out to Ingrid and her family and I send my warmest regards and deepest sympathy.

Gillian Easson (Board of Governors)

-----

I shall always appreciate and remember with pleasure Alan's kind personal interest in my activities, not least during preparations for my secondment to BBSRC. We had a considerable mutual interest in cricket, and shared a memorable day's play at Old Trafford in 2005, from which he sent me two cricket books that I treasure. Alan's contributions to Manchester were immense, and he is hugely missed. My condolences and thoughts to all the family.

Professor Douglas Kell (staff member)

-----

This came as a great shock this morning and I know that you will be deeply affected. Alan was a great man to work with and it is tragic that he has been denied his family plans for the future. Our thoughts are with his family and all of his work colleagues at this very sad time. My last memory of him was at his city retirement dinner when he was on top form and I shared his optimism for the future. I now know how much effort that performance must have required.

Professor John Brooks (Vice-Chancellor, Manchester Metropolitan University)

-----

I was very shocked to hear the news of Alan's death.  I know he had been ill, but hadn't realised it was so bad.  There is also something very tragic about a death outside your home country; it must be very difficult for Ingrid and the family.

My thoughts are with you, Ingrid and colleagues.

Paul Layzell (Deputy V-C, University of Sussex, formerly of The University of Manchester)

-----

I just wanted to say how shocked and saddened I was to hear of the death of Professor Gilbert.

I obviously can’t profess to have know him very well but in my dealing with him he always struck me as a man of great intellect and purpose, as well as courtesy – he clearly made a significant contribution to the University at a very important time in its history and I’m sure that his passing will be keenly felt by all who knew him and worked with him at the University and beyond.  I’m sorry that he was unable to enjoy a long and deserved retirement.

My deepest sympathies to you all and of course to his family, for whom this must be a bitter blow.

Christopher Mordue (Partner, Pinsent Masons LLP)

-----

I was deeply saddened to learn of Professor Alan Gilbert's death.  Please accept my heartfelt condolences at this difficult time and I ask you to please pass these sentiments on to all your colleagues at The University of Manchester.  Professor Gilbert was a remarkable man and his contributions to The University of Manchester will not be forgotten.

My sincere thoughts and prayers are with you.

Rami Hamdallah (President, An-Najah National University, Palestine)

-----

Whilst I did not have the privilege of meeting Professor Gilbert, I have always been aware of the high regard in which both staff and students have held him.  His efforts to make the University a world-class research institution certainly did not go unnoticed by others involved in the higher education sector, and I am aware from my close relationship with the University of Manchester Students’ Union that his endeavours, on behalf of students, for an enhanced learning experience were particular admired.

Professor Gilbert’s six years at the helm unquestionably transformed the University and it is clear that he has put the University on a firm path to future success, particularly through the 2015 Agenda. I would like to take this opportunity to send my deepest sympathies and condolences to Professor Gilbert’s family, friends and all of his colleagues at the University.

John Leech (MP for Manchester, Withington)

-----

It was with great sadness that I learned of Alan Gilbert’s death.

As you may be aware, Alan was one of our Commissions from the UK Commission’s inception in April 2008 until recently when ill-health forced him to resign. Although he was with us for a comparatively short time Alan, through his characteristic energy, integrity, intelligence and vision, has made a significant and much valued contribution to our organisation. His acute perceptions and sage advice added real depth to the Commission’s deliberations.

As a fellow Australian, I found an easy empathy with Alan, whose personal advice and support for me was very valuable. I didn’t get to know Alan well enough to presume to call him a friend but I do wish I had had the opportunity to build such a relationship over time. I will genuinely miss him.

On behalf of Sir Mike Rake, our Chairman, and all the Commissions and staff, I should be most grateful if you could pass on our sincere condolences to Alan’s wife and family.

Chris Humphries, CBE (Chief Executive, UK Commission for Employment and Skills)

-----

On behalf of myself and Battelle, I want to offer our condolences on the passing of Professor Alan Gilbert.  We are deeply saddened by the loss of this remarkable leader.

Alan was a visionary, who saw the value of international partnerships in creating innovative approaches to science and technology.  As President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, he championed the relationship between Battelle and the University’s Dalton Nuclear Institute.  His leadership was instrumental in our successful bid, with Serco, for management of the National Nuclear Laboratory.  The Dalton Nuclear Institute’s and National Nuclear Laboratory’s leadership in the United Kingdom nuclear renaissance are just two of Alan’s many legacies.  He will be sorely missed.

Dr. Jeffrey Wadsworth (President & Chief Executive, Battelle)

-----

On behalf of the University Hospital South Manchester please accept my deepest condolences for the sad and untimely death of Professor Alan Gilbert.

Many of us knew and had the highest respect for Alan.  He picked up the challenge of shaping the newly merged University into a world class institution and succeeded beyond many people’s wildest expectations.  He has made us all very proud to be a part of this great institution.  He inspired us all with the scale of his ambition and has ensured that the University is recognised as one of the most important assets of Greater Manchester and the North West Region.

Please offer our deepest sympathy to his wife and family.

Felicity Goodey (Chairman, University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust)

-----

I learned with shock and deep sorrow the news about Alan last week.  I have known Alan as a colleague on the Council for Science and Technology and our paths crossed briefly when I became Chairman of UMIP.  I have always found Alan to be highly capable as a colleague and extremely interesting and stimulating in discussions as well as being a thoroughly nice person.  Please pass on my deepest condolences to his family.

Dr. K. Rajagopal (Chairman, UMIP)

-----

On behalf of the National Nuclear Laboratory we would like to extend our sincere sympathy to you and also to the family of Professor Gilbert.  Alan was highly respected by all of us here at the NNL and his contribution and visionary leadership was instrumental in the successful bid, with Serco and Battelle, for management of the National Nuclear Laboratory.

We are well aware of the legacy he has left behind and he will indeed be sorely missed by us all.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences at this sad time.

Mike Lawrence (Managing Director, National Nuclear Laboratory)

-----

On behalf of Keele University can I convey our condolences on the news of the passing of Alan Gilbert.  The whole HE community has been aware of the substantial contribution Alan made during his time at Manchester, and I know that he will be greatly missed.

-----

On behalf of the members of the Manchester Luncheon Club and in my personal capacity I would like to express our sadness at the passing away of Professor Gilbert.  He was one of our Vice-Presidents and spoke to the Club four years ago.  His address was inspirational and much appreciated.

Please convey our condolences to the University and his family.

Professor Max Elstein (President, Manchester Luncheon Club)

-----

This is extremely sad news about Alan.

Very, very sad. I only met him on a few occasions but he was obviously a nice man and had a powerful positive effect on both Manchester and those around him.

Add my condolences to those given to his family.

Professor Keith Gull (Principal, St. Edmund Hall, Oxford)

-----

It has come with great sadness to members of this Society to learn of the death of Professor Gilbert, known well professionally to a considerable number of them, and highly respected by all of us.

Please, therefore, accept from me expressions and sympathy from the Manchester Literary & Philosophical Society to yourself and other colleagues of Professor Gilbert at the University.

David Higginson (President, The Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society)

-----

On behalf of Serco and Dr. Bob McGuiness, please accept our condolences for the untimely death of Alan Gilbert.  I have the pleasure to chair the Serco-Battelle-University of Manchester Contract Performance Review Board (CPRB) for the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) on which Colin Bailey and Andrew sherry now represent Manchester.  Alan had been a good champion for Manchester’s nuclear ambitions and a good friend for NNL, playing an instrumental role in establishing the CPRB.

Once again, my condolences.

Dr. Brian Bowsher (Director, Science, Serco Defence, Science & Nuclear)

-----

I shall really miss Alan: not only the legacy of his exceptional work in bringing the two universities together but also his passion for outstanding leadership and management.  I really valued our one to ones.

Professor Stephanie Marshall (Leadership Foundation)

-----

I was shocked to hear of Alan's death so soon after his retirement. It is so sad that he was unable to return to Australia to enjoy a lengthy retirement which would, I am sure, have included some more scholarship. There is probably no better legacy to his vision and energy than the rebuilding of the Oxford Road corridor creating a real University campus in what looked like a minor Victorian industrial complex in its previous incarnation. Anyone who knew Manchester and its University in the 90's and earlier would be astonished by the transformation wrought since the merger on Alan's watch.

My sympathies are with his family and friends.

Alan remains an inspirational lighthouse for those of us trying to push the web side of things forward in HE. Never forgot that 'Good to Great - Jim Collin's' talk he offered at the inauguration. I only spoke to him a few times but always he left a strong and inspiring impression. Many thanks Alan and God Bless.

-----

It is sad to believe that Professor Alan Gilbert has gone into eternity. Although he is gone, his contributions to The University of Manchester remains his greatest and indelible legacy for both students and staff.

I recall as a student leader we had an open forum with him in March 2009 at the Union Building to discuss a wide range of issues affecting students, particularly study space. His simplicity and his intelligence in responding to stidents questions is something I have never seen. True to his promise that a multipurpose facility would be constructed for students, the structure is being constructed but he is not around to see its completion.

I take this opportunity on behalf of my colleagues to express our deepest conldolence to his family. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Honestly, to live in the heart of those who love you is not to die. I was opportuned to be a student in this great institution of higher learning during your tenure as Vice Chancellor. I may not have personally met you, but the testimony of those who have met you shows clearly that you were a man of no mean repute, especially with regard to your leadership disposition. My heartfelt condolence goes to your family and the entire University community. You will be greatly missed by all of us.

Adieu, Professor Alan Gilbert. You were one of a kind.

I was very sad to hear about the death of Professor Alan Gilbert, less than a month into his retirement. I worked closely with Alan over the past year and I was impressed by the genuine commitment he showed to improving students' lives, and how ready he was to listen to and work with the Students' Union on a range of issues. My most enduring memory of him is from the landmark Senate meeting he chaired in February, where the controversial (and very student-friendly) feedback policy was introduced: despite clearly being unwell, he chaired the meeting with his trademark iron fist and ensured all sides got their say (particularly the Students' Union, for which I was grateful and took full and outspoken advantage)! What’s more, he brooked no nonsense from certain factions at Senate trying to delay a policy created by and for students on a technicality, and stood up as strongly for students as myself and Gabriel did.

The student body and Professor Gilbert had their ups and downs: the initial post-merger focus on research over teaching caused some upset amongst students, well symbolised by the occupation of the Arthur Lewis building in 2007, but Alan also introduced his President's Review of Undergraduate Education in 2007 and rewrote the University’s strategic plan to place the student experience on an equal footing with research. It was Alan's vision that made the feedback policy possible, and Alan's voice calling for a more personalised learning experience, i.e. smaller group teaching and actually having academics who know your name. As well as driving Manchester's reputation up and up the league tables, Alan Gilbert should be remembered by the students of Manchester as someone who listened to students and expended huge amounts of personal energy to spearhead a culture change to ensure that students receive the best quality education they can. Culture change is a long-term goal, and we've had some quick wins already (feedback, academic advisers), but Alan Gilbert's legacy will stay with us for years to come and his vision will be especially important to keep in focus in testing financial times.

On behalf of the Students' Union, I’d like to offer our sincere condolences to Professor Gilbert's family, and pay tribute to him for the work he did at the University of Manchester to improve students' lives.

My hearfelt condolences go to Professor Alan Gilbert's family at this very difficult time. During my time at The University of Manchester, Professor Gilbert's commitment to making Manchester one of the best universities in the world was visible to all. Under his leadership, the "new" university was created through the merger of UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester, and many new buildings were erected, including the Smith building and the AV hill building, dedicated to research in the Life Sciences. These tangible demonstrations of his commitment to the university (and more besides)will be a long-lasting legacy. I am just so sorry for him and his family that he was not able to enjoy a well deserved retirement after many years of hard work.

I hope that knowing how much Professor Gilbert was appreciated and respected by others will give his family some strength to help them with their dreadful loss.

It was with great sadness that I learnt of the demise of Professor Alan Gilbert. My association of his leadership having started as a doctoral student at the University of Melbourne and then academic. Action is the real measure of intelligence. I was a colleague of Alan's at UNSW, first when he was Professor of History in the Faculty of Military Studies where it was already clear that he was destined for higher honours and so it turned out as he went on to become Pro-Vice Chancellor. My sole substantive and lengthy discussion with Alan left an indelible impression of an incredibly engaged man whose commitment to the further development of tertiary education could not be doubted. Alan knew what he thought but he also knew how to listen. One might not have agreed with all of his decisions or all aspects of his view of education, but he was a dynamic leader of this university who has left a real and substantive legacy. I am truly saddened that he could not return to retire with his family in Melbourne, a city I know so well. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

We are all saddened by the loss of Alan and feel great sympathy for Ingrid, with whom we have had the true pleasure of sharing happy times at Broomcroft. Alan was an inspiration to all of us, making our close association with the University feel very special. His commitment to our efforts in the US were always far above our expectations. We know our feelings about Alan and NAFUM are paralleled in everything Alan touched. Extraordinary vision, commitment to excellence and inspiring all around him to achieve far more than they thought possible are the basic building blocks for the incredible change that has occurred at the University in the six years of Alan's leadership. But above all of that, Alan was a wonderful human being. His energy, enthusiasm, belief and values were so immediately evident that his impact on everyone he touched was powerful and warm. Alan was one of a kind. The world is a far better place from Alan's contributions and we are personally enriched from having the honor of knowing him. We will especially miss him as a friend.

Professor Gilbert was a powerful source of inspiration for all of us. He showed us how big challenges are supposed to be faced and left us with a clear objective in our minds: “go further!”

I am sure everybody in the University will appreciate his enormous legacy and learn from his attitude in life.

It is in our hands to keep his ideals and objectives alive.

Thank you very much Prof. Gilbert.

We are really sorry for the loss of a great man whom gave the university a lot and was always open to listening to new ideas from all members of staff. A pleasant and down to earth man. A great leader. We wish you all the strength to enable you to go through these difficult times.

I was really shocked to hear the sad news of the demise of Professor Alan Gilbert, our former head of the University. I saw him in an event organized by the University in June and was impressed by his great easy-going and pleasant personality. I read his last editorial/message in the University monthly magzine of July 2010 and felt that he was still craving for the joys of serious writing which I myself am feeling while working on my research dissertation. He was also an accomplished historian but possessed no dryness.

Although grief is a personal thing, still we and his family share the same feeling.

Whilst working on many events around the university I was privileged to get to know Professor Gilbert quite well. He was always approachable and happy to pass the time of day with anyone. He had an intimate knowledge of football and cricket. A truly inspirational leader who will be sorely missed. RIP.

Alan was a star and brought his light to Manchester, which was great for the University, City and NW UK. One special contribution he made was to support company spin-outs from the University, which is one important product of a centre of excellence.

We will miss you Alan.

It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of Prof. Gilbert at a time when he should have been standing back and watching the fruits of his labour blossom during the coming years. My sincerest condolences go out to Professor Gilbert's family at what must be a difficult time for them. I hope they can take comfort in the warmth of sentiment from all of the University community.

I only met Alan Gilbert twice in person but as a member of staff at the University I feel I knew him. I am very sad and sorry about his premature death and that he wasn't able to enjoy the retirement that he had planned and was looking forward to in Australia. He achieved remarkable things in his life and we feel very privileged that he was President of our University.

Alan Gilbert was an inspiring leader of the 'new' University of Manchester. He brought renewed purpose to everyone in the two pre-unification institutions, and set all of our sights high. The tragedy of Alan's all too early death is, for me, tempered by the wonderful work he (and we all) have done since 2004. My heartful sympathies go to Alan's wife and his entire family. The loss is very great indeed.

I was extremely sad to hear that Professor Gilbert had passed away. He was a true leader whose ambitious plans for change were one of the main things that drew me to work at the University. His support for nuclear research and education was critical both from a Manchester but also a wider UK perspective. On the few occasions I met him I found him to be an inspiration and I am sure his influence will live on.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Gilbert family at this time.  Professor Gilbert did an enormous amount for this University and it is tragic that he was not able to enjoy his retirement and reflect with others on what he had achieved.

My deepest sympathies to Ingrid and all of Alan's family. The news of Alan's death was shocking and has deeply saddened me and all of my colleagues. This was a life well-lived but so unfairly robbed of a retirement.

I am shocked and saddened by news of Alan's death, particularly as he was looking forward to enjoying retired life after such dedicated and highly stressful service to the University. I met Alan only a few times, in a small group, but I found him sincere and serious. I felt he was totally committed to the University and helped to enliven its life and culture. My condolences to his family and friends.

I only met Alan a couple of times but I found him courteous, intelligent and a genuine scholar. We once had a long chat about issues of mutual interest and I will remember him well. I also feel something of an affinity, having recently begun having heart problems. My best wishes to his family and friends.

May I offer my sincere condolences to Mrs Gilbert and her family for their very sad loss. Although I had no engagement with Professor Gilbert it is just so very sad that he was unable to enjoy his retirement, in his home country of Australia, with his family. At least he is now no longer in pain and is at peace.

With deepest sympathy
