What is the Postgraduate Symposium? What will I get out of it?

The CEEBL Postgraduate Symposium will take place on 21st October 2009 at CEEBL (C24 Sackville Street Building). This one-day event will offer postgraduate students an opportunity to share and improve their teaching experiences and techniques. The aim of the symposium is to engage with postgraduate students who are keen to help shape future teaching practices at the University, by sharing their examples of implementing Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL) and other small group teaching methods.

The symposium will also consider links between research and teaching. Any Researchers interested in individual accreditation with the HEA will need to demonstrate their interest in developing teaching practice and the symposium provides an ideal opportunity to explore this.

Who are CEEBL?

CEEBL aims to promote and develop Enquiry-Based Learning methods across the University of Manchester. CEEBL sees engaging with up and coming Higher Education teachers as an essential part of this process.

What is EBL? Do I use it in my teaching?

EBL covers a spectrum of approaches, for example:

EBL
NOT EBL
Group projects

Spoon feeding (some lectures)

Case studies

Regurgitating facts (some exams)
Dissertations and Final year projects
Seminars/tutorials where students contribute

EBL is learning through doing, so if you ever use group work, research, real world case studies or encourage your students to develop transferrable skills along with developing their discipline skills, then you’ve used it!

See here for student definitions of EBL
