Partners in widening participation

At Manchester, widening participation in higher education for students from diverse backgrounds is central to our values and goals, supporting a fairer, socially responsible and progressive society for all. As such, we work with a range of partners to support and advise our undergraduate recruitment and widening participation work.

The Ogden Trust

Manchester is part of the Ogden Trust Teaching Fellowship Programme.

Each year, we place postgraduate students – primarily from our Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences – in secondary schools to work alongside teachers and pupils. Our students aim to get young people excited about studying science, especially physics, with the aim that they will continue to further their education in this area.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT)

Manchester is an affiliate of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT): an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation dedicated to raising levels of achievement in secondary education.

SSAT works with headteachers, teachers and students to encourage them to develop and share new and effective teaching and learning practices, and to help schools to raise standards and levels of achievement.

Our University is represented on the national Higher Education/Schools Steering Group, which identifies good practice in issues relating to Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) and higher education progression.

Pure Potential

Pure Potential is an independent education organisation that helps up to 10,000 students annually from state schools and colleges around the country. Help is provided via online platform, plus eight summer events for sixth-form students at some of the UK's most prestigious universities – of which The University of Manchester is one.

Our Undergraduate and Widening Participation Team works with Pure Potential to support events on our campus. Pure Potential events allow students to see the full range of courses and facilities on offer.

We also provide generic support and advice on choosing a course, career prospects, personal statement writing and student finance.

Higher Education Liaison Officers Association

Manchester is a member of the Higher Education Liaison Officers Association (HELOA). HELOA is the professional association of staff in higher education who work in the field of education liaison, and provide guidance and information to prospective higher education students, their families and advisers.

HELOA members work in a wide range of functions within universities, covering areas of school and college liaison, student recruitment, widening participation, external relations, marketing, publications and publicity, and student services. What binds the membership together is a common role in education liaison activities and a commitment to encouraging high standards of professionalism amongst members.
