Study

Criminology at Manchester enables you to understand why crime has become a dominant social problem, and how crime and criminal behaviour are related to other social issues.

Criminology is the study of crime and societal responses to crime. It brings together insights from different social and human science disciplines to understand the behaviour of:

  • offenders;
  • victims;
  • criminal justice practitioners; and
  • various institutions that focus on addressing crime.

It is not possible to understand crime without understand societal, legal, and practical arrangements that make it feasible. In this way, criminology uses crime as a window to critically examine the world in which we live and to explore how to organise life in safer and fairer ways.
