British Science Week comes to Manchester!

British Science Week 2016

Science is getting spectacular this month as University of Manchester scientists put on a host of events for the public as part of British Science Week (11-20 March).

A robot orchestra, getting started in astrophotography and getting behind the scenes at a leading cancer research centre are just some of the activities taking place in Manchester, Birmingham and at Jodrell Bank.

Two of the events are being organised by Cancer Research UK at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre building in Withington, Manchester. On 14 March, scientists are taking groups of people on behind-the-scenes tours of their labs. That event is fully booked but there’s still a chance to join the Science Café on 17 March to hear from a cancer researcher about his work, in an informal talk.

On 15 March, at the world-famous Jodrell Bank there’s a beginner’s guide for getting into the world of astrophotography. Attendees will learn how to capture different images of the night sky such as constellations, the colours of stars and star trails.

We’ll also be at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham as Professor Danielle George conducts the Manchester Robot Orchestra and will show you how discarded technology and even everyday items from around the home can be put to new and exciting uses.

On 16 March, Professor Brian Cox will be speaking about gravitational waves and the origin of life at University Place in support of Childreach International.

And finally, science meets art on Manchester Day this year (16 March) with a Eureka theme for the annual celebration of Manchester life. At a secret location at 6pm, University scientists and artists will get together to come up with ideas, have fun and mingle together.
