Schools across Greater Manchester are currently busy preparing for a next month’s Great Science Share – a landmark celebration of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects which will take place on Wednesday 6 July.

One of the flagship events of Greater Manchester’s European City of Science programme, the Great Science Share will be a day for young people of all ages to share what they enjoy about science. So far over 175 schools have pledged to take part in the event, and will host activities such as science assemblies, year group science experiments and end of year science fairs.

On the day schools will be encouraged to share their experiences with neighbouring schools and local communities as well as online using #scienceshare. There will also be special Great Science Share takeover events where schools to come together at Manchester Town Hall and the Museum of Science and Industry.

Annie Keane, Director of the European City of Science Programme, said: “The Great Science Share is an opportunity for young people to take the lead and be in the spotlight in this unique year for Greater Manchester. Creativity and confidence in STEM are really important and 6 July also provides a focus for teachers to raise the profile of science in their schools. There’ll be a real buzz on the day, and we encourage every school to join in and celebrate science.”

“Our city has produced a wealth of innovations - it is the place where the industrial revolution began, the atom was split and the programmable computer was created - and the University of Manchester has produced a vast number of scientific heroes, including Marie Stopes, Alan Turing and Brian Cox. Science, technology and engineering can seem like intimidating subjects to some, so the Great Science Share is a way of demonstrating to the next generation of pioneers that they are exciting and fun subjects to study, which have the potential to change the world.”

The Great Science Share is a major part of the European City of Science, and will kick-start a bumper month of science engagement across Greater Manchester which will culminate with the week-long Science in the City festival. Beginning as schools break up for summer (22-29 July), it will incorporate over 40 free pop-up events which will bring science to life across Manchester city centre.
