The University of Manchester’s new Chancellor Lemn Sissay has set out his vision to inspire young minds in his first magazine interview since taking on the new role.

Lemn says he wants to support the University’s work to close the attainment gap and create a student experience that produces the next generation of leaders and groundbreakers.

In an interview for The University of Manchester Magazine, Issue 1 of which is available from today, Lemn also explores how his own experience has brought him to where he is today and to his new role as Chancellor.

He says: “I have very clear aims. I want to support the work the University is doing to close the attainment gap – to make sure everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“The success of an organisation is, for me, defined by how the most unseen parts of it, and the most unseen parts of society, are strengthened – something the University works very hard towards. This is a university that has a social conscience that isn’t about ticking a box; it’s part of the lifeblood of the University and is something to be incredibly proud of.”

Lemn, who was installed as the University’s ceremonial figurehead in October, appears on the cover of the new magazine – a beautifully bound collection of words and images carefully curated to showcase some of the finest work within the University.

With opening words from University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, the first issue includes features on the 2015 British Election Study, the 2D materials revolution set to change industry the world over and the fight to tackle global inequality, as well as commentary from academics on some of society’s biggest challenges including the migrant crisis, dementia and climate change.

Editor-in-chief Kate Cassidy said: “This new magazine is testament to the collaborative, creative and innovative spirit of working that lies behind so much of the University’s success.

“We have looked to both the University’s proud heritage and revolutionary spirit and to its future of world-changing discovery to produce a publication that brings together the finest examples of research, teaching and learning, and social responsibility, and aims to inspire our communities and partners, locally and across the globe.”

The University of Manchester Magazine Issue 1 is available across campus.

An online edition is also available.
