Abstract
This article presents for the first time in their entirety four letters to Brecht from different girlfriends from 1916-18, which Parker identified in the Augsburg Brecht Archive. Amongst the few surviving letters to the young Brecht, these documents are juxtaposed with poems, diary entries and correspondence to demonstrate the adolescent Brecht's early striving towards the polygamy which he practised throughout his adult life. The article identifies developing modes of behaviour characteristic of Brecht's famous anti-romantic love poetry, particularly warnings to lovers about the ephemeral nature of love and about their interchangeability.
