In April 2016 Manchester eScholar was replaced by the University of Manchester’s new Research Information Management System, Pure. In the autumn the University’s research outputs will be available to search and browse via a new Research Portal. Until then the University’s full publication record can be accessed via a temporary portal and the old eScholar content is available to search and browse via this archive.

Abstract

We have investigated reflection of edge states from the boundary between a disordered region and a high-mobility region of a two-dimensional electron gas. alpha-particle bombardment has been employed to reduce selectively the mobility. We observe an exponential increase in reflection of the innermost edge state from the disordered region as the temperature decreases. The results are explained in terms of the Milne reflection of electrons which are elastically scattered back before thermalization can occur.
