Abstract
Raman scattering investigations were carried out on the liq. crystal, 4-(methylheptyoxycarbonyl)phenyl 4'-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate, which exhibits both antiferroelec. and ferroelec. phases. The occurrence, scattering intensity and position of peaks assocd. with different parts of the mol. are reported as a function of temp. across the solid, liq. cryst. and isotropic phases. The results indicate a significant change in mol. configuration at the solid to liq. crystal and liq. crystal to isotropic phase transitions, the core adopting its most planar configuration in the crystal phase. Finally, an unusual temp. dependence of the position of the Raman peak assocd. with the Ph C=C stretching mode is noted within the SmC*aphase. [on SciFinder (R)]
