In April 2016 Manchester eScholar was replaced by the University of Manchester’s new Research Information Management System, Pure. In the autumn the University’s research outputs will be available to search and browse via a new Research Portal. Until then the University’s full publication record can be accessed via a temporary portal and the old eScholar content is available to search and browse via this archive.

Abstract

We report details of the interaction between a thin film of ferroelec. ceramic (lead zirconate-lead titanate) and an overlying layer of nematic liq. crystal. Pulsed elec. fields of 1ms duration and of varying amplitudes and polarity have been used to achieve different degrees of poling within devices in which one substrate includes the ferroelec. ceramic layer. The degree of orientation of the nematic liq. crystal is found to depend on both the amplitude and polarity of the poling voltage employed. The magnitude of the poling voltage necessary to induce reorientation in the liq. crystal compares reasonably with the calcd. value. The reorientation of the nematic liq. crystal due to the interaction with poled grains of PZT is stable for at least several months. [on SciFinder (R)]
