In April 2016 Manchester eScholar was replaced by the University of Manchester’s new Research Information Management System, Pure. In the autumn the University’s research outputs will be available to search and browse via a new Research Portal. Until then the University’s full publication record can be accessed via a temporary portal and the old eScholar content is available to search and browse via this archive.

Abstract

The modification of Pt electrodes with com. filtration membranes is used to study the interplay between soln. and membrane mass-transport in nonaq. soln. Two types of com. membrane, track-etched polyethylene terephthalate and gamma -Al2O3, are employed. Voltammetric and amperometric data are obtained under both hydrodynamic (rotating-disk) and stationary conditions, which is interpreted in terms of a pinhole model. Contrasting behavior is seen for the different membranes, which can be understood by consideration of the membrane thickness relative to the diffusion layer established in soln. In particular, overlapping diffusion behavior is obsd. for the much thinner polymer membranes under hydrodynamic conditions. [on SciFinder (R)]
