Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of CBT and its current application within health and social care services in the UK. The defining features of CBT are described in terms of its underpinning principles. A multi-level definition of CBT is set out that incorporates its theoretical underpinnings, the evidence base, treatment techniques and paradigms, therapist competencies and practice, and service delivery and contexts. How CBT can be distinguished from non-CBT interventions is then considered. Finally, some of the future challenges and directions for the development of CBT are outlined.
