Introduction

Welcome to the University of Manchester's web pages for students coming from the USA. Some of the information here will also be useful for students who are currently studying in another part of the world, but at a school or college operating the US system. 

Whilst we speak the same language, the systems and the words we use here in the UK can be very different, so these pages are designed to help you understand the UK system and what The University of Manchester can offer you.

You will have your own reasons for investigating the University of Manchester and the UK as a destination for your studies, but we think the following are also important to know:

For undergraduates

  • You can complete your undergraduate degree in three years;
  • You have the opportunity to specialise in a particular area of study or to maintain a broader range of study;
  • The costs of our programmes are competitive with equivalent institutions in the USA, basic health care is free under our National Health Service and many places offer discounts on goods for students;
  • You can immerse yourself in British culture and mainland Europe is easily accessible;
  • Overseas study enhances your employability.

For graduate students

  • You can complete your Masters in one intensive year;
  • You have the opportunity to focus on a particular subject of interest to you; 
  • The costs of UK courses are competitive, basic health care is free under our National Health Service and many places offer discounts on goods for students;  
  • We have an active North American Foundation and a network of over 4,000 alumni in the USA;
  • You can immerse yourself in British culture and mainland Europe is easily accessible;
  • You are entitled to work while you study (up to 20 hours a week).

Through the generosity of our alumni, our North American Foundation for the University of Manchester (NAFUM) sponsors a number of scholarships for US nationals.

Bringing your Stafford or private loans to The University of Manchester

Most of our US students are self-funded through Stafford or private loans. We offer a dedicated service for students who wish to bring their loans with them.

Statistics

There are around 140 US students at The University of Manchester who are studying with us for full degrees as well as a large number of students who come on exchange or to study abroad with us for a semester or year.
