Students who have completed 12 years of education in China and attained the Secondary School Leaving Certificate must complete a Foundation Programme or GCE A Level for progression onto the undergraduate degree programmes. They will also need to demonstrate proficiency in English language.
The University is a member of the Northern Consortium (NCUK) which offers an International Foundation Year (IFY) at Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Qingdao, Wuhan, Beijing, Changsha, Suzhou,and Guangzhou. Students who have completed the IFY programme and have obtained the required grades will be considered for admission on to the degree programme.
The University offers foundation courses for engineering and science, and applications are equally considered from those completing other foundation programmes in the UK. All applications for undergraduate programmes and foundation programmes should be made through UCAS.
Students who hold a three-year diploma (Da Zhuan) from a recognised Chinese university may be considered for direct entry to some of the second year undergraduate programmes. However, we strongly advise you to check this with the Admissions Tutor of the relevant programme before making the application. Applications must be made through UCAS.
Taught Masters Applicants with a bachelor's degree from a recognised Chinese university with an overall average grade of 75% or a GPA of 2.8 (out of 4.0) minimum will be considered for admission onto taught master programmes.
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English language and some programmes require GMAT scores. Please refer to the entrance requirements of individual programme for further guidance.
Research Programmes and PhD
Applicants with an undergraduate bachelor degree with a minimum grade of 80% or a masters degree from a recognised Chinese university will be considered for postgraduate research programmes of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
As the research programmes involve individual supervision, we strongly recommend the applicant makes initial enquiries with the supervisor or the relevant School first. A research proposal is required in submitting your application.
Students who wish to apply for the overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) or Manchester and China Scholarship Council (CSC) Joint Scholarship must have a masters degree qualify for the scholarship.
English language requirements vary by course and department but are usually the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 -7.5 (or TOEFL 540-630 or computer based TOEFL 207-267).
Some departments ask that the appropriate score has been met before you apply for a course whilst other departments give conditional offers subject to applicants achieving our general entry requirement level of English language proficiency before starting the course.
