Programme description

Isotope Geochemistry and Cosmo chemistry applies a fundamental knowledge of isotopes and chemistry together with new observations to understand natural systems. Together with a strong history of designing and building many of its own instruments, group research interests extend from extraterrestrial systems and early solar system processes to addressing some of the key resource and environmental problems society faces today.

We work on precious samples from the moon, mars, rare meteorites and samples returned by NASA missions. Research includes understanding the processes forming the solar system starting material, the rate and timing of the formation of meteorites and early solar system bodies leading to the formation of the terrestrial planets.

We have projects that study how the Earth's mantle works and those that reveal the workings of volcanic systems in place like Iceland.  We use isotopes to trace ocean circulation and climate change, investigate safe carbon dioxide sequestration and understand drinking water contamination processes that can affect millions.

Fees

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2014, the tuition fees are as follows:

  • PhD (full-time)
    UK/EU students (per annum): Band 1 £6,200, Band 2 £8,850, Band 3 £12,550
    International students (per annum): Band 1 £18,000, Band 2 £18,450, Band 3 £22,050
  • PhD (part-time)
    UK/EU students (per annum): Band 1 £3,100; Band 2 £4,425; Band 3 £6,275
    International students (per annum): Band 1 £9,000; Band 2 £9,225; Band 3 £11,025

Please note for the majority of projects where experimentation requires further resource: higher fee bands (where quoted) will be charged rather than the base rate for supervision, administration and computational costs. The fees quoted above will be fully inclusive and, therefore, you will not be required to pay any additional bench fees or administration costs.

All fees for entry will be subject to yearly review and incremental rises per annum are also likely over the duration of the course for UK/EU students (fees are typically fixed for International students, for the course duration at the year of entry). Overseas students would need to demonstrate competence in English Language, for example, IELTS score of 6.5.

Some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.
