Teaching and learning

With its '5' rating in the last RAE exercise, History at the University of Manchester can offer strong, research-led supervision by numerous recognised scholars in many fields of modern, medieval and economic history. Please consult the detailed research interests of staff. There are noted strengths in modern cultural and social history, in which, as well as British, non-British expertise has a significant profile - e.g. modern European urban history and refugee history. In an integrated School it offers good opportunities for inter-disciplinary approaches with English, American Studies, History of Art, Religions and Theology, and has robust links with the School of Social Sciences, the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, and with the historians in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures.

Progression and assessment

PhD students have regular one-to-one meetings with a specialist supervisor and twice yearly meetings with a research panel.
