Advanced Professional Health Studies: Postgraduate Stand Alone Units

Degree awarded: Masters Level modules

Duration: Module dependant: usually 12 weeks part-time

Entry requirements:

In addition to a recognised health professional qualification*, all applicants require one of the following:

  • A relevant honours first degree (2:2 or above, or equivalent) from an approved higher education institution
  • Evidence of previous advanced study, research or professional experience which the University accepts as qualifying the applicant for entry

Non-SLA funded part-time students, seconded from employment to undertake the programme, require the written support of their employer to attend the programme and to complete any necessary practice requirements.

For students working in the NHS in Greater Manchester (and, in the case of some modules, the wider Northwest) who wish to apply for a place funded through the NHS North West CPD Service Level Agreement (SLA), line manager support and Trust SLA authorised signatory is obtained as part of the CPD apply system.

*Health Professional in the context of this programme refers to registered Nurses, Midwives or Allied Healthcare Professionals (AHPs) in direct clinical contact with patients and registered as such with the UK NMC, HPC or their equivalent in other countries.

Course fees: For entry in the academic year beginning September 2013, the tuition fees are as follows:

  • Modular (part-time)

    International students (per annum): TBA per 15 credits

Course description

A range of part-time Masters-level modules for qualified Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals are available as individual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) stand-alone modules.

Special features

Many of the units provide unique opportunities for interprofessional learning with students from a range of health care professions studying together. Students thus benefit from interprofessional learning whilst at the same time being able to apply the knowledge and skills from the modules to their specific discipline/area of practice through their assessments.

Students will study with students enrolled in a range of programmes and from a range of disciplines.

English language:

Students whose first language is not English are required to have one of the following:

  • GCE English
  • IELTS 6.5, with a score of 6.0 or above in each component
  • TOEFL 575 paper-based or 230 computer-based
  • Evidence of equivalent learning

Interview requirements

In some cases, candidates may be required to attend an informal interview at the University.

Teaching and learning

Students undertaking modules participate in a range of teaching and learning methods including:
  • Lectures
  • Small group work
  • Student-led seminars
  • Problem-based learning
  • Online learning
In addition, students will be required to undertake independent study in order to further develop and consolidate their learning. A number of modules are available fully online.

Progression and assessment

A variety of assessments are used within the modules. All assessments require students to integrate knowledge and understanding, and apply this to their own practice relevant to the outcomes of each unit.
