Entry requirements:  Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions criteria of the University and of the School:

  • A good honours degree (or equivalent) in a related area from a recognised institution
  • An initial qualification in teaching, if this is not formally part of your first degree, would be desirable
  • Candidates whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0 (with 7.0 in writing) or equivalent
  • Two satisfactory academic references

Course description

The course is aimed at well qualified graduates wishing to undertake postgraduate study of educational policy and practice. It has been designed for teachers and other education professionals working in a range of educational settings.

Special features

The course places particular emphasis on the use of inquiry-based approaches that enable participants to develop expertise in analysing educational contexts, designing improvement plans, and supporting and evaluating their implementation. The aims of the programme are to:

  • Provide students with the opportunity to engage critically with thinking and history in the field of inclusive education.
  • Analyse global issues of inclusion and leadership, and ways in which governments, local authorities, schools and local communities can reduce barriers to participation and learning for all children.
  • Prepare students to implement and evaluate developments in relation to their own future practice as leaders in the field of inclusive education.
  • Develop students' ability to undertake independent research in the field of inclusive education and leadership.

The course is taught by leading academics in education policy and practice. Course units include: Understanding the Development of Inclusive Education, Leading Educational Change, and Contemporary Issues in Education.

Academic entry qualification overview:  Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions criteria of the University and of the School:

  • A good honours degree (or equivalent) in a related area from a recognised institution
  • An initial qualification in teaching, if this is not formally part of your first degree, would be desirable
  • Candidates whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0 (with 7.0 in writing) or equivalent
  • Two satisfactory academic references

English language:

Students whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in writing and no other component below 5.5, TOEFL internet-based test 100 with 25 in writing and no other component below 20, or Pearson Test of English 66 with 66 in writing and no other component below 51.

Re-applications

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry.  In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved.  We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course.

Progression and assessment

Course units are primarily assessed through a range of written assignments. A range of teaching and learning methods are employed and students on the programme are encouraged to take a full, active and participatory role on the course consistent with their professional aspirations.  All participants completing the full Masters Degree need to complete a dissertation or equivalent.
