Entry requirements:

Applicants will be required to provide evidence of their primary dental qualification from a recognised institution.

Course fees: For entry in the academic year beginning September 2013, the tuition fees are as follows:

  • MSc (full-time)
    UK/EU students (per annum): £16,500
    International students (per annum): £38,000
  • PGDip (part-time)
    UK/EU students (per annum): £5,500
    International students (per annum): £13,150

The fees quoted above will be fully inclusive for the course tuition, administration and computational costs during your studies.

All fees for entry will be subject to yearly review and incremental rises per annum are also likely over the duration of courses lasting more than a year for UK/EU students (fees are typically fixed for International students, for the course duration at the year of entry). Course description

These programmes are designed for experienced dental practitioners who wish to further their knowledge in endodontics, the branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the tooth root, dental pulp and surrounding tissues.

Additional course information

Dissertation

The aim of this unit is to offer research training in the identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project.

Teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage the student to take responsibility for their own learning and to integrate work with informal educational activities.

Examples of dissertations submitted include:

  • The use of microcomputed tomography (Micro CT) in the assessment of obturation techniques
  • A comparative study of three periapical radiographic techniques for endodontic working length estimation
  • Microleakage of posts luted with resin based materials

Course unit details

For the MSc, there are 4 components

Research Methods Unit: The aim is to equip students with skills related to design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research

Biostatistics Unit: The aim is to equip students with skills related to data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research

Specialist Clinical Units: The aim is to give students an understanding of the scientific basis of endodontics, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients

The Specialist Clinical units encompass the following:

  • Core lectures to include:
    • Medical emergency management
    • Cross infection control
    • Radiological protection
    • Clinical governance
  • Interactive seminars related to endodontics
  • Pre-clinical skills course
  • Clinical treatment sessions in state-of-the-art facilities
  • Attend consultation clinics
  • Case reviews
  • Participation in journal clubs

Research Unit: The aims are to train students in the identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project and to give students experience of working independently. Recent projects include studies related to restoration of the root filled tooth, imaging procedures, effects of irrigating solutions on root dentine and intracanal flora

For the PGDip, there are 3 components:

Biostatistics: The aim is to equip students with skills related to data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically-related research

Specialist Clinical Component: The aim of this component is to give students an understanding of the scientific basis of endodontics, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients

Full entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

Applicants will be required to provide evidence of their primary dental qualification from a recognised institution.

English language:

Students whose first language is not English require one of the following:

  • IELTS test 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in the written component and no less than 5.5 in all components)
  • TOEFL test: 577 paper-based (with no less than 5.5 in the TWE - Test of Written English)
  • TOEFL test: 233 computer-based (with no less than 5.5 in the TWE - Test of Written English)
  • TOEFL test: 90 (internet-based) (Minimum: Listening/Writing 17; Reading 18 and Speaking 20)
  • Pearson Test 59-65 (with no less than 51 in each component)

This certification must be no more than 12 months old.

Relevant work experience: Two years post-graduation experience is required.

Advice to applicants

Applicants should provide the following:

  • Proof of two years post-graduation experience
  • Two academic references. Both must be on headed paper, and signed and dated and within the last twelve months
  • Copies (not originals) of degree certificates
  • Official academic transcripts of previous study showing the subjects taken and grades obtained. (If these are in a language other than English please provide official translations.) Note: If applicants hold a BDS from a UK university they need not provide a transcript of results but they must provide a copy of the certificate
  • Copies (not originals) of English Language certification

Note: Only applications with all required supporting documentation will be processed. Conditional offers cannot be made for those that do not meet the minimum requirements for the course. The School does not make conditional offers on the submission of supporting documents.

International Students: Please upload a copy of your current valid passport showing the photograph page with your application.

Evidence of citizenship of an EU country will be required for those claiming home student status. The School also requires applicants to have at least two years experience in general professional practice.

Re-applications

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard programme entry criteria for that year of entry. In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved. We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen programme.

Progression and assessment

  • Research Methods unit: MSc, PGDip: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor-marked assignments
  • Biostatistics unit: MSc, PGDip: Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor-marked assignments
  • Clinical units: MSc, PGDip: The clinical units are assessed by (1) a written assignment (2) submission of clinical cases (3) a written examination and (4) a structured oral examination For the MSc, a dissertation is also submitted
