This degree will provide both quantitative and qualitative training.  It is aimed at those wishing to study the links between new globalising forces (eg modernization; democratization) and other changes in the social and political character of societies.

Each masters student conducts a research dissertation project.  These projects cover the comparative analysis of gradual social change in different countries or regions.

Full entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

UK 2:1 Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a Social Science subject for direct MA entry.

UK 2:2 Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) for Postgraduate Diploma Route entry

English language:

IELTS - overall score of 7, including 7 in writing with no further component score below 6.0

TOEFL IBT - overall score of 100 with 25 in each section.

TOEFL code for Manchester is 0757

Scores are valid for 2 years.

For students who require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, your test score is valid for 2 years preceding the date that your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is issued.  CAS statements will be issued from June-September 2013.

For example;

Test taken on or after 1 June 2011 - CAS issued June 2013 = Score is VALID

Test taken before 1 June 2011 = Score is INVALID

Please note that CAS statements are issued only when all conditions of the offer have been satisfied, PDF copy of passport received and the offer accepted.

Re-applications

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry.  In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved.  We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course.If you are applying for a place for the same year of entry through UCAS Extra, you should provide additional evidence of your suitability for the course. If you are applying through clearing you are required to meet the clearing requirements. In both UCAS Extra and clearing the places will be subject to availability.

Teaching and learning

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PART-TIME STUDY

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over two years.  There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme.  

You must first check the schedule of the compulsory modules and then select your optional modules to suit your requirements.  

Updated timetable information will be available from mid-August and you will have the opportunity to discuss your module choices during induction week with your Course Director
