Reputation of The University of Manchester

The University of Manchester's reputation for research is renowned.

No fewer than 22 people connected with the University have won Nobel Prizes and we have continually been at the forefront of development in a number of fields.

Both Rutherford's work in splitting the atom and the first modern computer were developed in Manchester.

Each year, research conducted at the University earns funding of £216m.

The 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results show that almost 1,300 of our academic staff are researching units at a national or international level, which is the standard we achieve for all our research.

The University of Manchester's strength in research has forged excellent relationships with industry, healthcare and public services.

Some of our major interdisciplinary research groupings are represented by a number of prestigious Research Institutes who combine with the research conducted in our four Faculties.

Facilities

The world famous observatory at Jodrell Bank, the John Rylands Library, the Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery are just some of the assests which make our research facilities second to none.

Our continuing investment means that we also have cutting edge scientific facilities, like our Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre, the Manchester Incubator Building and our Molecular Beam Epitaxy.
