Ecclesfield Grammar School ('O' and 'A' Level) 1961-67. Coventry Technical College (ONC) 1967-68. Qualifications. BSc (Hon) Mechanical Engineering, 1971 UMIST. MSc Mechanical Engineering (Applied Mechanics), 1974 UMIST. PhD 'The reduction of plant maintenance costs through design', 1983 UMIST.

Employment history. 1967-68 Jaguar Cars Ltd. Student Apprentice: 1971-73 Renold Ltd. R & D Department (Engine Test and New Products Design). 1975-78 BNFL, Windscale R & D Department: Design and development of equipment. Resource Planning Department: Manpower and financial planning.

First appointment to UMIST as lecturer in 1978, Retired 2007 Professor of Engineering Design (University of Manchester).

Secondment in UMIST - Director Continuing Education 1990-1992 p/t (Assistant Director 1987-1990).
