C.235, Clinical Sciences Building,
I trained in Medicine at the University of Malta. After qualifying, I moved to the UK and was appointed a senior house officer on the West Midlands General Surgical Rotation. During this time I pursued my interest in neurovascular inflammation and set up my first multicentre clinical study in subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) (PI). I was appointed as a neurosurgical registrar in 2004 and worked in training posts in Birmingham and Bristol. In 2005, I moved to Manchester to work on an MRC-funded clinical study under the supervision of Prof Dame Nancy Rothwell and was subsequently awarded a PhD in September 2009. I resumed my clinical training in Feb 2009 as a run-through specialist trainee in Neurosurgery in the North West. In 2010, I was successful in securing MRC funding for a Phase II clinical trial in SAH (SCIL Study) and was appointed a Clinical Lecturer in Neurovascular Surgery in August 2011 with supporting grants from the Stroke Association and the Academy of Medical Sciences. I have passed my FRCS exit exam in neurosurgery in 2012 and pursued a neurovascular fellowship at Salford Royal Foundation Trust. I completed my neurosurgical training in August 2014 and was subsequently appointed as a consultant neurovascular surgeon at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
