Kersti Börjars did an undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature (Doctorandus) at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands and then went on to do an M.A. in Linguistics at the University of Manchester. Before starting the degree in Leiden, she had studied for two years in Uppsala, Sweden and because of the modular system in operation in Sweden, was able to complete a degree (Filosofie Kandidat) there by completing three semesters of Dutch at the University of Stockholm. In 1994, she completed her Ph.D. thesis on 'Feature distribution in Swedish noun phrases', which has since been published by Blackwell.

Since 1994, she has been a member of staff at The University of Manchester, where she was promoted to professor in 2002. During 2002, she was a visiting professor at Göteborg University.
She was appointed Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the newly formed Faculty of Humanities in January 2004 and remained in this role until January 2008.
