Biography

I am currently a Reader in Multiscale and Sustainable Manufacturing, after having been a Senior Lecturer in Manufacturing (from August 2009 to July 2011) and Lecturer at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) since 2002. My expertise and research is in Manufacturing Technologies (machining science, laser processing and sustainable manufacturing). I obtained a PhD and MSc in Manufacturing Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Technology respectively from The University of Liverpool, UK. My first degree is a Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree in Industrial Engineering from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Zimbabwe. Previously I worked in Production Engineering for F Issels and Son Ltd Engineers and Founders; as a University Teacher at NUST; and as an Honorary Fellow and University Teacher at The University of Liverpool, UK. At UMIST I was the Course Tutor for the Undergraduate UMIST Degree Course in Engineering Manufacture and Management (EMM) and I am now currently a co-Director of our MSc in Advanced Manufacturing Technology & Systems Management. I am a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a Member of the International Academy of Production Engineering, College International pour la Recherche en Productique (CIRP). The CIRP was founded in 1951 with the aim to address scientifically, through international co-operation, issues related to modern production science and technology. I serve as a member of Senate for The University of Manchester. In the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering, my major administrative responsibility as Director of External Affairs is to champion and lead Business Development and Social Responsibility agenda. This involves overseeing the Knowledge Transfer interface with industry and society, public engagement and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses. The University has an important role to play in wealth creation and shaping society as well as helping company employees, update their education and skills base.
