Prof Simon Rowland (BSc, PhD, CEng, FHEA, FIET, FInstP, FIEEE) - research

Research interests

My work converns the design of electrical insulation materials and systems, and their reliability. I am particularly active developing models for high voltage insulation surfaces, and models for asset management, and work closely with a number of utilities. Presently I manage the EPSRC 'Networks Top and Tail' Grand Challenge collaborative project in which 8 Universities are engaged.  I work on insulation systems for overhead lines and cables, and I have a number of EPSRC funded projects, mainly associated with insulation systems. I work closely with UK utilities and a number of industrial collaborators.

Particular areas of focus are:

  • Reliability of dielectric materials
  • Polymeric insulation systems
  • Asset Management
  • Low current arcs
  • Overhead line design and cable insulation
