Dr Sotiris Plainis (MSc, PhD) - personal details
Sotiris Plainis completed his undergraduate studies in Optics and Optometry in Greece and UK. These were followed by postgraduate (MSc, 1995; PhD, 1999) and postdoctoral (1999-2001) research at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, UMIST, UK. Since then he has been employed as a Principal Research Scientist at the Institute of Vision and Optics (IVO), University of Crete, being a faculty member of two postgraduate courses (Optics & Vision", “Brain and Mind” Sciences) and having an active research group in visual psychophysics and electrophysiology.
He forms a member of the Educational Committee of European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAOO), the Faculty of the Basic Optics course organised by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS) and a Fellow of the International Society for Contact Lens Research (ISCLR) and British Contact Lens Association (BCLA). He has published widely in his field (> 45 manuscripts in peer-reviewed Journals) and is a reviewer of Postgraduate Scholarships of the British College of Optometry.
He has maintained strong links in both research and teaching with the University of Manchester, lecturing on the MSc course in Ophthalmic Investigation and obtaining three grants collaborating with Dr Ian Murray. Since November 2006 he has been appointed as Honorary Lecturer in the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester.
