Summary of Research interests

Volatiles such as H2O and CO2 play important roles in many Earth processes, either as fluids or in minerals or melts. I am particularly interested in knowing what happens to water as it is recycled into the Earth at subduction zones. Which minerals contain water in subducting slabs? At what depth do these minerals dehydrate? Does the released water then react to form new hydrous phases? What is the structure of these high-pressure phases? Most of the research in Manchester over the last several years has involved doing piston-cylinder and multi-anvil experiments to investigate the stability of some of these phases. Complementing the phase-equilibrium experiments have been in-situ X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic measurements at high pressure and temperature using synchrotron radiation.
