I studied Biology as an undergraduate before moving into sociology to study for an MA and PhD in 'Science and Technology Studies' at the University of Nottingham, jointly supervised in the Institute for Science and Society and in the School of Law. I worked with Professors Robert Dingwall, Paul Martin and Ralph Sandland and wrote my PhD on the social and legal implications of the development of neuroscientific lie detection for use in criminal justice settings.
Before moving to Manchester I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, working with Susan Molyneux-Hodgson on the development of synthetic biology in the context of UK water services.
