Biography

Anilena has a Master in Clinical and Health Psychology (1:1) and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Manchester. After completing her PhD, she worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Queensland (Australia).  She is now a full-time researcher in Panama, Central America, at Instituto de Investigaciones Cientificas y Servicios de Alta Tecnologia (INDICASAT AIP) located in the City of Knowledge (i.e., Ciudad del Saber).

Her research so far has evaluated parenting programs and family-based interventions in Panama and their impact on violence prevention. She is more broadly interested in understanding and preventing violence in urban and rural low-resource settings, particularly in Latin America. She is currently researching ways to reach parents and children from high-risk vulnerable communities widely, in a culturally-sensitive way, and using cost-effective evidence-based techniques that are locally sustainable.

She is also interested in developing projects in partnership with communities. For example, in 2013 she produced a short documentary to showcase the life and resilience of the women in the high-risk Panamanian neighbourhood of San Joaquin, Central America. The idea was to give voice to unheard communities, increase their international visibility and promote action. You can watch the documentary here.
