Biography

Tony Mellor qualified from Guy's Hospital in 1975. Following a year in general dental practice, he returned to hospital posts to prepare for Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) which he passed in 1979. He returned to general dental practice in the West Country, initially as an associate, before starting his own practice in Gloucester.  He moved to the University of Manchester in 1985 as a Clinical Research Fellow in the Dental Health Services Research Unit. He completed his PhD in 1989 on the factors affecting the treatment of children by general dental practitioners.

He then became a Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in Manchester in 1990 and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Primary Dental Care and Honorary Consultant in Dental Surgery in 1996. In 2004 he was awarded the Diploma in Conscious Sedation with merit from the University of Newcastle.

He has been Director of the 5th year course within the BDS programme and was re-appointed as Senior Tutor for Undergraduate Studies for a second term in October 2010.

He is a member of the General Dental Council Fitness to Practise Panel.

Role

Clinical Interests

Tony's clinical interests are mainly in the field of pain diagnosis and pain and anxiety control. He receives a steady stream of patient referrals from practitioners for advice and treatment planning.

Teaching

Tony's primary teaching role is with 5th year students in the Dental Casualty department.  Here the students see patients in pain and gain experience in diagnosis, treatment and patient management.
