Biography

Director of Eurocran, a programme of studies funded by the European Union (www.eurocran.org) and he also leads the clinical aspects of a World Health Organisation initiative "international Collaborative Research on Craniofacial Anomalies" (www.who.int/genomics/anomalies/cfaproject/en/ ).

He is a joint co-ordinating editor of the Cochrane Collaboration Oral Health Group (www.cochrane-oral.man.ac.uk ).

 

Graduated Glasgow 1968. After 3 years general training in Manchester, he spent 13 years in Cardiff as Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Orthodontics.  Fellowship in Dental Surgery, specialist diplomas in orthodontics, and Masters and PhD degrees. Awarded honorary doctorate, University of Gothenburg in 2000.

Past funding from MRC, NIH, NHS R&D EU and others. Presently funded by NIH.

Till the late 1980s focused mainly on establishing the diagnostic and quality assurance standards for orthodontic care, that are now applied in the UK and internationally. Subsequently undertook critical evaluations of British outcomes for the treatment of children with cleft lip and palate that eventually led to the establishment of new regional centres across the UK.

Since then with Gunvor Semb established international collaborative groups on research regarding the treatment and genetic basis of cleft lip and palate and related craniofacial anomalies.

With Helen Worthington in 1996, launched an international programme on evidence based oral health care by establishment of an Oral Health Group within the Cochrane Collaboration in 1996.
