Ethnic differences in neuropathy: role of microvasculature
In our recent research we have confirmed and extended reports of low rates of diabetic peripheral neuropathy in South Asians vs Europeans, using objective electrophysiological testing. We are now defining the basis for these ethnic differences in neuropathy by studying detailed nerve fibre and microvascular structure and function. Specifically, we are assessing nerve regenerative capability using immunohistological techniques in skin biopsies and corneal nerve morphology. Furthermore, we are using Laser Doppler Imaging techniques and electron microscopic morphometry to investigate whether improved regulatory mechanisms and/or differences in capillary structure in Asians with diabetes is a major contributor to their improved peripheral nerve structure and function.
