My laboratory uses bacteria in laboratory evolution experiments to study the ecology and genetics of adaptation. The specific topics addressed are the evolution of bacterial transformation and competence, the cause and consequences of within population phenotypic heterogeneity, and the ecological factors that give rise to and maintain biodiversity. Bacteria are particularly suited to such studies owing to their rapid generation times and their ease of experimental control.
