Fenglei studied Textiles at Qingdao University from 1999 to 2006. He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees in July 2003 and July 2006, respectively, and then started his PhD research on needleless electrospinning and nanofibre coating for hybrid yarns, funded by ORS under the supervision of Dr. Hugh Gong and Prof. Isaac Porat, in the Textiles & Paper, School of Materials at the University of Manchester in September 2006. He received his PhD in Textiles in December 2009.

From February 2010 he started to work as a research associate on brain-mimicking MR phantoms within a FP7 funded project  ("CONNECT") with Prof. Geoff Parker in Centre for Imaging Sciences, Institute of Population Health and Dr Penny Hubbard Cristinacce within the School of Psychological Sciences and Prof. Steve Eichhorn at the University of  Exeter. From Februrary. 2015, Fenglei was promoted to research fellow working on tummour cell mimicking microstructures as part of the CRUK & EPSRC Cancer Imaging Centre in Cambridge & Manchester.

He has general research interests in electrohydrodynamic techniques based polymeric micro- and nano-fibres/spheres, with special interests in upscaling of electrospinning, coaxial electrospinning/electrosparying and applications of micro/nano-fibres/spheres in textiles and biomedical areas.

Fenglei's main role is to undertake research projects regarding design and construction of tissue-mimicking polymeric microstructures by electrospinning/electrospraying, and their characterization by electron microscopy for application in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). Fenglei is also co-supervising Masters and PhD students' projects.
