Biography
Dr Gemma Edwards gained her PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester in 2006. After her PhD, she worked for a year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow before commencing a lectureship in Sociology at the University of Manchester in September 2007. She works in the areas of critical social theory, social movements and protest, the intersections between political activism and personal life, and the role of interpersonal social networks in sustaining radical/alternative practices.She is a member of the Manchester Social Movements Group, the Mitchell Centre for Social Network Analysis, and the Morgan Centre for the study of personal life. She is an editor of the journal Social Movement Studies, and sits on the editorial advisory board of Manchester University Press. Along with Professor Sue Heath and Dr Katherine Davies, she is currently working on a £435,000 ESRC-funded project ‘Under the Same Roof’ about contemporary forms of co-housing (May 2013-16), where she will be looking at the role of interpersonal networks in sustaining shared living arrangements. She has a book forthcoming in 2013, Social Movements and Protest (Cambridge).
