I studied peace studies at Bradford and political philosophy at York before doing a PhD in sociology at Birkbeck College, London, which I completed in 1997. My thesis was on the philosophy of social science with a particular focus on the idea of intentional explanation.
After that I taught at the universities of Bradford and Northumbria, moving to Manchester in 2004. I have also worked as a visiting lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark and have given talks and seminars at many universities in the UK and some in Poland, Denmark, Canada and Belgium.
