Completion of medical degree at the University of Nottingham, 1996, then working in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester as a junior doctor.

In 2001, I started on the Rheumatology Specialist Registrar rotation in the North West Deanery. During this time, I completed an MSc in Clinical Rheumatology, examining HLA-DRB1 associations in myositis, which led to a successful application for an Arthritis Research UK Clinical Research Fellowship. My research base was the Centre for Integrated Genomic Medical Research (CIGMR), at the University of Manchester, where I carried out a range of genetic association studies in myositis and examined some important clinical correlations, including the characterisation of an antibody which is highly sensitive for cancer-associated myositis.

I was awarded a PhD in 2007 and started a NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in 2008. In 2009 I became a Consultant Rheumatologist at Salford Royal, and in February 2010, started a Senior Lectureship funded by HEFCE and Salford Royal.

I am part of an international consortium for a genome wide association study in myositis (IMACS, EUMYONET, UKMYONET), and chair a web-based consortium to collect standardized myositis clinical data ( in 8 countries. I am also co-chiar of UKMYONET, a national collaborative network which aims to foster collaborative research in inflammatory myopathy.

Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology, based in the Musculoskeletal Group, Institue of Inflammation and Repair. Also Honorary Clinical Consultant at The Rheumatic Diseases Centre, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. The academic component of my job is HEFCE funded and the clinical component funded by the trust, the split being 50:50.

My primary research interest is the investigation of genetic and environmental risk factors in inflammatory muscle disease, or myositis. This is complemented by a tertiary referral muscle clinic which I co-run with Professor Robert Cooper, where patients are clinically managed and are recruited into ongoing research studies. I also have a research interest in the immunogenicity of biologic therapies.
