Before coming to Manchester John ONeill was professor of philosophy at Lancaster University. He has also held posts at the University of Sussex and the University of Wales. He is currently director of the Political Economy Institute. He is director of the MA in Political Economy. He is also a member of the Society and Environment Research Group and the Centre for Democracy and Elections. He is on the editorial boards of a number of journals including New Political Economy, The Journal of Applied Philosophy,  and Historical Materialism. He has been involved in a number of European projects on environmental policy. Between 2000 and 2003 he was a member of the Department of Healths CJD Incidents Panel.
