Dr Linda Briggs - research
My research focuses on the cultural, religious and intellectual history of sixteenth-century France. I specialise in the French Civil Wars (1562-1598), with particular emphasis on ritual and visual culture. At present, I am revising my PhD thesis for publication as a monograph, entitled A King Among the Bees: Authority and Peace-Making in Charles IX's Royal Tour of France (1564-1566). I am interested in the performance of royal festivites (triumphal entries and court magnificences) and religious ceremonies (feast days, baptisms and marriages) during the Valois and Bourbon monarchies. My broader interests include diplomatic relations between France and the British Isles, traditions of religious art, and the consumption of luxury goods in the French Renaissance.
