Helge Hoel is a Professor in Organisational Behaviour and a recognised international expert on bullying, harassment and violence in the workplace. He carried out the first nationwide survey of workplace bullying in Great Britain in 2000 (with Professor Cary Cooper) and later the first evaluation study within the field, examining the effectiveness of organisational anti-bullying interventions. He has written and contributed to a number of books, articles and reports in the area of bullying, violence and harassment, including commissioned works for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions. He is the co-editor of the primary text within the field: Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace: Development in Theory, Research, and Practice (Second Edition, 2011) (with Ståle Einarsen, DieterZapf and Cary Cooper). Recently, Helge has embarked on an inter-disciplinary agenda, contributing to a broadening of the bullying research agenda beyond organisational and social psychology, into the disciplines of sociology, law and industrial relations, which has resulted in several articles in leading international journals such British Journal of Industrial Relations; Human Relations; Work, Employment & Society and European Journal of Organisational Relations.
His most recent research is associated with sexual orientation and sexuality in the workplace, where he is currently Principal Investigator of a three-year ESRC-sponsored study of ‘Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual employees’ experience of discrimination, bullying and harassment at work.
He is the Director of the University of Manchester Fairness at Work Research Centre (FairWRC), which has been established to develop cross-disciplinary research within five related research themes: dignity at work; gender and diversity; workplace health, stress and well-being; voice and representation; pay, working time, HRM.
