I got the secondary studies Diploma from the Liceo Scientifico "Giovio", Como, Italy, with top grades (60/60).
The Collegio Ghislieri of Pavia - founded in 1567 to open the doors of «ingenium» to young students with limited financial resources - fully supported my undergraduate and MSc studies, completed in 1974 with a «cum laude» degree in bioengineering. I started studying statistics and promoting it in an academic environment where the need for a proper methodological foundation of data analysis was not given for granted. The University of Pavia employed me for 34 years (24 with a professorial appointment) in which I did research and enthusiastically taught biostatistics to undergraduates and MSc/PhD students from mathematical, engineering and medical faculties, locally and internationally.
During second half of the 80s, the start of my collaboration with Cambridge statisticians opened my work to international recognition, and marked the beginning of an exciting period of research. During this period I became responsible of advances in bayesian modelling and computation whose scientific implications have become clearer ever since. My british link grew stronger and stronger. Between 2001 and 2007 I was a visitor at Cambridge's Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit, with capacity of principal investigator in a european project. There I formed a group of statisticians, geneticists and bioinformaticians as a model of future interdisciplinary research.
Following an invitation to work in the Statistics Department of the University of Cambridge, in 2008, I packed my bags and waved good-bye to italian academia. Working in the new environment made me smaller, but younger, and set me back to the real height of being a researcher. Support and inspiration by scientists like Philip Dawid and David Cox propelled my work in causal inference and statistical prediction.
In Cambridge I was the lead editor of the landmark book "Causality: Statistical Perspectives and Applications" (Wiley, 2012), one of the first attempts to provide a wide-angle view of causal inference, and its scientific implications. And now ... Manchester ... a place which might witness modern statistical methodology teaming up with the scientific muscle of a thriving medical research community. Success of this marriage will depend on scientific insight at leastas much as on managerial ability. In Manchester I lead a small group of young biostatisticians involved in such research themes as causal inference from longitudinal data, joint modelling of biomarker and time-to-event data and gene-disease causality. Our research is strongly motivated by the scientific questions that emerge from medical research.
