Biography

Nathan Owston completed his undergraduate studies (including a year at GlaxoSmithKline) at Cardiff University (2003) before moving to the University of Bath to undertake a PhD with Professor Jonathan M. J. Williams. He then moved to the United States as a Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT in the group of Professor Gregory C. Fu, before returning to the UK to take up a position at the University of Oxford.

After a brief hiatus to various cold and high places in Latin America he was appointed Lecturer in Chemistry at Newcastle University (2011), prior to moving to the University of Bristol to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Science). Subsequently, he relocated to the Netherlands to take up a position as Lecturer in Chemistry at Maastricht University before returning to the UK and his current position at The University of Manchester in 2015.

Nathan’s educational research interests primarily concern innovative models of delivery and assessment, with an emphasis on problem-based/student-led approaches and small-group teaching in Higher Education. In addition, he has been actively involved in widening participation initiatives in Science, including community and schools outreach and mentoring programs in the UK, Europe and US. As time permits, he maintains a modest research interest in the development of new metal-catalysed carbon-carbon bond forming reactions, particularly towards catalytic upgrading of bio-derived feedstocks and semi-synthesis of natural products.
