Biography

Dr Zhong obtained her PhD degree from Cambridge University in 1994. She joined Manchester University as a Lecturer in 1997 after having worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Oxford University for three years. She received her BEng and MEng degrees from Tsinghua University in China. Dr Zhongs research is mainly concerned with fluid flows. She is particularly interested in studying the fundamental physical mechanics of complex fluid phenomenon using various experimental methods, including PIV and flow visualization techniques. The primary focus of her current work is on flow separation control using synthetic jets and mechanism of laminar-turbulent transition, both of which have applications in aerospace engineering. She is also interested in studying the mixing of viscous fluids with applications in chemical engineering. She began to undertake research in the area of low-Reynolds number propulsion when she had her six-month sabbatical at Princeton University in 2009. She is currently continuing this work in collaboration with Princeton. As the principal investigator, Dr Zhongs work has received financial support with a total value of about 1.2 million pounds from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust, Airbus UK, BAE Systems, EADS and other sources. She has published over 90 papers in international journal and conferences. Dr Zhong has supervised 3 three-year postdoctoral projects, and graduated 10 PhD and 3 MPhil students so far. She is currently leading a research team consisting of 6 PhD and one MPhil students. Dr Zhong is a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
