Biography

I joined Sociology and the Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing in November 2012 and took up a 2-year EU-funded Marie Curie Fellowship in October 2013. This project explored older people's experiences of place and community in their neighbourhoods, building on participatory approaches and methods of co-production.

In November 2015 I took up the role as a research fellow linked to the Ambition for Ageing Programme, which has a particular focus on targeting older people at risk of problems associated with social isolation in Greater Manchester (£10 million).

I start working on a research project entitled ‘Urban Ageing and Social Exclusion’, funded through the ESRC Future Research Leaders scheme, in March 2016. This project involves a comparative study of social exclusion among older people living in urban areas in three EU nation states, with the results having an impact on the World Health Organisation's 'Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities', as well as in Europe through the engagement of AGE Platform Europe and other international stakeholders. The project will build on international collaborations developed through the International Network on Population Ageing and Urbanisation (INPAU), which aims to combat social exclusion among older people living in urban environments.

Before coming to the University of Manchester, I was a PhD student, Research associate and more recently lecturer in Educational Sciences at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). I hold an honorary position at VUB, where I continue to develop joint work with colleagues involved in the Belgian Ageing Studies. I am a module leader for Advanced Qualitative Research at the MSc in Education and Sustainable Development at the Anton De Kom University in Suriname.
