Aims

The course will discuss how to formulate a research project and assist the students in the production of an applied economics dissertation It will also give some instruction into how the research project is conducted, how it is written up, and how to give a presentation of the results.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students who have studied successfully will have demonstrated that they have:

  • the ability to formulate an appropriate research project
  • experience of using information technology as a research resource
  • experience of writing a Research Project using appropriate information    technology
  • appropriate knowledge of software packages: e.g. Excel, Stata, Eviews, R, Gretl
  • used basic statistical and graphical techniques to explore and analyse the appropriate data
  • had experience of accessing such data from public sources
  • clearly demonstrated appropriate use of library and other appropriate resources.

 

Teaching and learning methods

Formal Lectures using PowerPoint or OHP depending on availability.

Tutorials - students will work in groups, including meetings between tutorials, and make presentations to the rest of the group.
